Drone video hasn’t just made aerial shots more affordable (which helps), it’s unlocked a massive creative opportunity. Suddenly, we can move freely through spaces, slip through windows, follow a character mid-action, or glide over landscapes without breaking the mood. All of that with stunning image quality and without putting anyone on the crew at risk. The camera no longer watches from a distance — with drone video, it flies, follows and breathes with the scene.
Examples in the movies
That’s exactly why cinema and TV quickly embraced this technology. Early productions like Skyfall, The Wolf of Wall Street or The Expendables 3 helped pave the way, and from around 2015 onwards, drone video really took off across the industry. From blockbusters like The Avengers or Jurassic World to series such as Narcos, Game of Thrones, Money Heist or Elite, aerial shots are now part of a visual language we instantly recognise — even if we don’t always realise why they have such an impact.
And it’s not all about spectacle. In documentaries and nature projects, drone video allows filmmakers to observe without disturbing, capture the true scale of a location, and add valuable visual context to the narrative. It’s even led to projects as unique as a feature film shot entirely with drones (In the Robot Skies: A Drone Love Story) and dedicated events like the Flying Robot International Film Festival. At this point, drone video is almost a genre in its own right.
